Where Old Shanghai Meets Modern Life
Staying at The Waterhouse felt less like entering a conventional boutique hotel than stepping into Shanghai’s layered memory: Neri&Hu retained the 1930s concrete structure, exposed scars, and weathered surfaces, then inserted new steel, glass, and carefully controlled light so that the lobby, courtyard, and guestrooms became an ongoing conversation between preservation and contemporary life.
The mirrored courtyard, irregular windows, and openings between public and private spaces made me constantly aware of seeing and being seen, while the bright room, old brick, simple furniture, and Kafka quotation turned discomfort, curiosity, and discovery into part of the experience; I left feeling that meaningful renovation does not erase age, but gives fragments, contradictions, and memory a new way to remain present.
