Fire Over Sugarhouse

A New Year Between Ruins, Mountains, and Flame

Staying at Yangshuo Sugar House felt like entering a landscape where a 1960s sugar mill, new guest buildings, reflective pools, and karst peaks had been composed into one quiet sequence; the old trusses, chimney, brick walls, framed restaurant views, and waterside gathering spaces showed how preservation can support contemporary comfort without erasing industrial memory.

At midnight, Guo Liaohui Studio’s Songming Fire Tower transformed the former cargo wharf into a ceremonial theatre: its rotating tensegrity frame rose through flame, sparks reflected on the water, and the surrounding mountains briefly appeared in the darkness, making the New Year feel less like entertainment than a collective farewell to the past and an invitation to begin again within the old mill’s continuing living history.
