Where Time Takes Root
Dwelling Among Ancient Homes, Trees, and Still Water
Staying at Amanyangyun felt less like entering a luxury resort than stepping into a landscape where memory had taken root again: historic Ming- and Qing-dynasty houses and camphor trees were relocated from Fuzhou, Jiangxi, while Kerry Hill Architects shaped them into a contemporary village of stone, timber, glass, water, and gardens on Shanghai’s rapidly changing metropolitan edge.
The photographs reveal how carved gateways, old beams, latticed screens, reflective pools, warm bathrooms, art, and the red-lit sauna balance preservation with comfort for contemporary guests; what impressed me most was the restraint, because nothing competes for attention, and the experience suggests that meaningful conservation is not about freezing history, but allowing old buildings and trees to support new rituals, rest, and memories.
