Beauty in a Cup: A Daily Act of Aesthetic Giving
“Aesthetic Co-Printing 143ml Glass Cup” is a design-driven project that connects art, public participation, sustainability, and everyday life. Executed by Ryan Kuo, the activity invited five designers to create individual graphic works, which were then printed onto the familiar 143ml glass cup. Through this process, an ordinary daily object was transformed into a small but meaningful carrier of culture, memory, and shared beauty.
The 143ml glass cup has long been associated with Taiwan’s everyday dining culture. It is modest in scale, practical in use, and commonly seen in homes, cafés, and local food scenes. Instead of treating design as something distant or exclusive, this project uses a familiar object to bring aesthetics closer to people’s hands. The cup is not only meant to be viewed, but also held, used, gifted, and remembered.
Each printed pattern expresses a different design language. The images include gestures, symbolic circulation, expressive brushwork, a glass slipper, and botanical forms. Together, they create a diverse visual collection while maintaining a shared sense of lightness and clarity. Because the cup is transparent, the graphics interact with light, liquid, shadow, and the user’s hand. As a result, the design changes subtly depending on how the cup is used, making it feel like a small moving artwork in daily life.
The idea of “aesthetic co-printing” also carries a social meaning. Inspired by the spirit of collective support, the project turns design into an act of giving. Designers contribute their creativity, the public receives and uses the cups, and beauty is passed from one person to another through ordinary moments such as drinking coffee or sharing a conversation.
Sustainability is another important layer of the work. The glass cup is made with recycled glass, giving discarded material a renewed life and value. Glass can be repeatedly recycled, symbolizing an ongoing cycle between material, design, and human connection. Overall, this project shows that even a small cup can carry a larger message: beauty should not remain only in galleries or design events, but should enter daily life, encourage sharing, and support a more thoughtful and sustainable culture.
